THE IMPACT OF HIV/AIDS EDUCATION ON UNIVERSITY ...

ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book examines the impact of HIV/AIDS Education on university students in Kenya. Mary postulates that Kenyan university students have adequate knowledge concerning HIV/AIDS but there is a disconnect between their attitude, knowledge, practice and behaviour towards HIV/AIDS Education. Using a cross-sectional descriptive approach, the author assesses the impact of HIV/AIDS Education provided by Kenyan universities and other sources vis-à-vis its reflection in the behaviour of university students. She further establishes attitudes portrayed by students and discusses the link between practices that predispose university students to HIV/AIDS infection and education. Consequently, the author recommends that the Kenya Government should ensure that HIV/AIDS Education is accessible to all university students by mainstreaming it in the entire university curriculum. This book is a must-read for students, lecturers, policy makers, counsellors and NGOs dealing with HIV/AIDS in Kenya and elsewhere in the world.

Globally, an estimated 35.3 million people were living with HIV in 2012. In Kenya, HIV and AIDS is a national disaster affecting mainly people in the productive and reproductive age group of 15 to 49 years. Home and Community Based Care (HBC) is a critical component in the care, support and mitigation of the effects of HIV and AIDS but whose utilization is still low in Kenya. The aim of this book is to document the factors associated with HBC uptake among rural PLWHAs in Kenya. A population based survey was conducted in rural Kenya among adult PLHIV. Respondents were randomly from among PLHIV registered and receiving HIV care and treatment in Government of Kenya comprehensive care centres. The overall utilization of HBC uptake among rural PLWHAs is low in Kenya. The study recommends scaling up of HBC programs to comprehensively cover all sub-counties that have established the services and to reach those PLHIV who have not accessed HBC, strengthening referral systems between HBC and other services including strengthening of linkage between health facilities and community so as to ensure the continuum of care, and strengthening Districts to support monitor and supervise HBC programs.

Theatre and performance in Kenya are practised by youth in varied forms in trying to combat HIV/AIDS. This book explores the potential and limitations of youth theatre and performance in responding to social issues in Kenya with a focus on HIV/AIDS. It questions the application, form, relevance and influence of a range of performances. Of particular interest are three areas in Kenya, namely, theatre in schools meant for the Kenya Schools and Colleges Drama Festival, theatre in schools prepared for pupils and the local community and theatre within communities sponsored by INGOs and NGOs in different parts of the country. Reference is made to examples of youth theatre work from South Africa and Uganda in order to compare experiences elsewhere in Africa with Kenyan practice and examine the possibility of the countries learning from each other.

The State of HIV/AIDS/TB Co-Infections in Kenya

Shorttitle: HIV/AIDS/TB in Kenya Mario J. Azevedo, Gwendolyn S. Prater, and Sandra Hayes argue that, without a deeper understanding of Kenya's cultural norms and practices on HIV/TB, which are spreading alarmangly in Kenya, scholars and health professionals will not be able to eradicate or meaningfully contain the devastating impact of the twin epidemics. A focus on factors such as the environment and the distribution and management of scarce resources alone represent only a fraction of what is needed to restore the health of the people and have them respond positively to the efforts made by the government authorities, health care providers, and humanitarians of international organizations. The three authors acknowledge the small victories Kenya has achieved against the burden of disease. However, without an integrated approach to the reduction and eradication of the many man-made and environmental factors responsible for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and other ailments, which together weaken and inhibit people's immune system, Kenya's health future will remain bleak for many years to come.
