Globally, the number older persons living with HIV/AIDS is increasing and Sub Sahara Africa (SSA) has 60% of all older persons with HIV. SSA countries have showed evidently as having aggressively responded to curbing the epidemic through a number of interventions. The older persons are among the vulnerable and marginalized group of people that need to be targeted with those interventions but have been ignored by my SSA countries. This was a critical literature review study which used secondary data from databases like Delphis, PubMed and Science Direct, search engines like Google Scholar and Wiley Blackwell, and websites. Appropriate literature was selected using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Some of the journals accessed included, journal of cross -cultural Gerontology, AIDS, African Journal of AIDS Research, AIDS care, among others. A conceptual framework showing the different dimensions of accessing HIV services was adopted and customised from Obrist et al (2007). The dimensions include availability, affordability, accessibility, adequacy and acceptability.

Denying AIDS

Paralleling the discovery of HIV and the rise of the AIDS pandemic, a flock of naysayers has dedicated itself to replacing genuine knowledge with destructive misinformation—and spreading from the fringe to the mainstream media and the think tank. Now from the editor of the journal AIDS and Behavior comes a bold exposé of the scientific and sociopolitical forces involved in this toxic evasion. Denying AIDS traces the origins of AIDS dissidents disclaimers during the earliest days of the epidemic and delves into the psychology and politics of the current denial movement in its various incarnations.Seth Kalichman focuses not on the “difficult” or doubting patient, but on organized, widespread forms of denial (including the idea that HIV itself is a myth and HIV treatments are poison) and the junk science, faulty logic, conspiracy theories, and larger forces of homophobia and racism that fuel them. The malignant results of AIDS denial can be seen in those individuals who refuse to be tested, ignore their diagnoses, or reject the treatments that could save their lives. Instead of ignoring these currents, asserts Kalichman, science has a duty to counter them.Among the topics covered: Why AIDS denialism endures, and why science must understand it.Pioneer virus HIV researcher Peter Duesberg’s role in AIDS denialism.Flawed immunological, virological, and pharmacological pseudoscience studies that are central to texts of denialism. The social conservative agenda and the politics of AIDS denial, from the courts to the White House. The impact of HIV misinformation on public health in South Africa.Fighting fiction with reality: anti-denialism and the scientific community. For anyone affected by, interested in, or working with researchers in HIV/AIDS, and public health professionals in general, the insight and vision of Denying AIDS will inspire outrage, discussion, and ultimately action.See http://denyingaids.blogspot.com/ for more information.

Cochlear Anatomy via Microdissection with Clini...
118,98 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This atlas focuses on selected aspects of cochlear anatomy as illustrated by material prepared by the microdissection technique , a three-dimensional perspective not possible with standard histological approaches. Although much of the material in this text was processed by the microdissection method, photomicrographs from conventionally cross sectioned inner ear tissues and scanning electron microscopy, are also presented. Taken together, these technical approaches provide different, complementary views of inner ear anatomy, and offer a more informative understanding than is possible with any of the methods used alone. While micrographs obtained from microdissected material appear sporadically in journal articles, there is no comprehensive collection of such images currently available. The illustrations assembled in this atlas are complementary to the more traditional histologic images and drawings available in standard texts, and aide in understanding the intricate anatomy of the cochlea.Cochlear Anatomy via Microdissection with Clinical Implications will be a useful resource for otolaryngologists, anatomists, audiologists, and neuroscientists. Those engaged in cochlear implantation, physicians and researchers in the growing fields of implantable hearing aids and drug delivery to the inner ear, and members of industry involved in designing, manufacturing, and marketing implantable hearing aids will also find this atlas of great value.
